An infrequent
blog, news snippets, et cetera. NOVEMBER 2009 Website gets a new look & A "Christian" OS As some of you have no doubt noticed, the website has a new "Gothic" look. It was decided that it was time to re-do the website, for more than one reason. This look was suggested, and I tink it was a good choice. It certainly is attention getter (and keeper). Codenamed "Gothica", I was hoping to get it up and running by All Hallows Day, but it took a little longer than thought. For you the more techno-geek types.... I made the switch from Windows to Linux, and it isn't because I have any axes to grind like most Linux users. I don't care if my OS came from Redmond or Bugtussle, as long as it actually works. I tried to do a dual boot installation of Linux which resulted on me not being able to run Windows. I tried to re-install Windows, but found for some reason, it can't be installed on my computer. Apparently my computer only likes Linux now. Could it have evolved? More than likely, I could buy another hardrive, because in my past attempts at Linux, I have found you can never completely erase it from your hard drive. I don't really have the money to buy a new disk, and as long as I can do the things I used to with Linux, I don't really need to. Besides, I didn't like Vista, and I have my doubts about future versions of Windows. Oh if you must know, I'm running PCLinuxOS. Freespire is also a stable version and easy to use. The HTML editor I was using, SoThink!, is not supported by Linux, and didn't run right on Vista, anway. I tried KompoZer, a free Linux HTML WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. KompoZer is multi-platform, which is perfect in case I ever switch back to Widnows or something. Turns out KompoZer (formerly Vue) works better than SoThink!. I discovered, of all things, there's even a "Christian Linux", it's called "Ubuntu CE", the CE stands for "Christian Edition". It's basically Ubuntu with a few extras, such as being able to run E-Sword, a Windows based Bible Software program. Ubuntu CE also includes GNUCash to manage finances and a "Net Nanny" type program to block unwholsome website. If you use the KDE interface, you would basically have a "Christian Kubuntu". The new edition no longer supports E-Sword, and includes BibleTime instead. BibleTime is similar to E-Sword, minus the graphics. In some ways I like it better. The thing about Ubuntu CE is that it comes pre-installed with 3 programs you could download and add for free anyhow...so is there any point in calling it an seperate edition of Ubuntu? Since it no longer supports E-Sword, there doesn't seem to be a real need for it. Firefox is included and has several links to sites owned by the UbuntuCE develper that sell "Jesus junk"...stuff like "Jesus Saves" keychains and coffee mugs, and that type of thing. It seems the only reason Ubuntu CE was created was so someone could make money off of Christians, and we have enough stuff like that already. Have a Blessed
Alll Hallows Eve!
I recently recieved an email from a major distributor of Bible tracts, encouraging Christians to boycott Halloween...yet at the same time to be sure to give out candy and Bible tracts Hallowe'en. They were lamenting that so many Christians had stopped celebrating Hallowe'en for church "Fall Festivals". It seems if you read between the lines, their sales of Bible Tracts are down this time of year , due to the fact less Christians are celebrating Hallowe'en, and thus, aren't buying tracts to give out. I emailed them back, pointing out how ironinc it was that all their railing against Hallowe'en over the years by calling it "the Devil's birthday", and other such non-sense had resulted in a hit to their livileyhood! God laughs last. I still celebrate Hallowe'en, which is NOT the same thing as "Samhain", and will continue to. Hallowe'en, or to be more specific, All Hallows Eve, was created to mock and make light of superstitious Pagan tradititons. A few Wiccans recognize Hallowe'en is not the same as their Samhain (pronounced "SOW-in"). There is a popular, but unfounded, belief that Samhain is the celebration of the Celtic god of the dead by the same name. But the celts didn't have a god of death named Samhain. This idea arose after Donald Pleasance mentions it in the 1978 horror movie "Halloween". There is no truth to it, but it sounded plausible to some, and so the error has been continually repeated. Every year I give out candy and Bibles for Hallowe'en. I usually buy 20 $1 paperback bibles, and give them out to whoever wants one. I get them at Dollar Tree, it's on of those "everything is $1" type stores. Sometimes you can find brand new Bibles at thrift stores for under a dollar or even free. So far no one has ever refused one, and some people seem totally excited to get one...you'd think they'd just won the lottery by their reaction. I get about as many adults as I do kids showing up for trick or treats, so it isn't just kids getting Bibles. If you're a Christian reading this, I encourage you to do the same. Giving out Bibles is much more effective than giving out Bible tracts. Some Bible tracts out there are horrible! Several years ago, I remember one woman calling up a talk radio show, complaining her child recieved a tract depicting people being killed by a chainsaw weilding serial killer when the went to a Jaycee type haunted house and then going straight to Hell. The tract also called Halowe'en the "devil's birthday", which as I've said, it's not. I'll be glad when more Christians realize the "turn or burn" scare tactics of the past is not the way to win people to Christ. If you're still uncomortable about Hallowe'en, call it "Reformation Day", because October 31st is the day Martin Luther nailed his 99 point thesis to a cathedral door. But whatever you do, don't make your kids hate religion by denying them one of the childhood pleasures of trick or treating, and don't miss a great opportunity to outreach. PRAY FOR... This ministry. For an end to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that are troops will come home safely. For me and my family.
