As a matter of fact, I have heard of the "Satanic Panic".

C L I C K   H E R E to read about it
Here is a list of crimes that have been well documented listed by year in no particular order. The list starts at 1900, which I made the cut off point, and will go on into the present day. The list includes Wiccans, Voodooists, Santerios, Abqas, Crowleyites, a Theosophist, "Gnostic Alchemists", and of course, lots of Satanists (sorry, but Satanists seem to commit most of the occult crimes. Go figure).

Plenty of occult crimes get little media coverage. I've listed a couple here that I personally know of, but that haven't got any airtime air time at all and only got mentioned in the local papers. Plenty of things happen that never get covered, I'm sure. In Miami for instance, finding Santeria items (used in trying to cast spells on judges)at the Dade County Courthouse...like parts of animals (chickens in particular), roots, herbs, candles, stones, etc., are so common place, they are not even considered news worthy anymore.   This list is by no means a list of every occult crime committed by occultists since 1900...and it's not meant to say that all occultists are criminals. Most aren't.

1988 Estuaire, Gabon, African President Omar Bongo (yes, that's really his name) met with leaders of the Catholic, Protestant and Moslem communities to discuss possible action against imported beliefs and practices of human sacrifices. This action was taken after an admission by a witchdoctor, purporting to belong to a sect based in neighboring Equitorial Guinea, that he had eaten six humans, including two of his own children, over the past decade. The witchdoctor was a railway worker and his followers had killed another victim, a teacher who was seeking help to solve family problems. (Rueters)

1988 Thurston County, WA
Satanist Paul Ingram, former Thurston County chief civil deputy sheriff and 16-year law enforcement officer, was arrested 11-28-88 following allegations of sexual abuse made by his 2 daughters, then about 18 and 22 years old. Ingram waived his right to counsel and made incriminating statements. After six months of further investigation and interrogation, he later pled guilty. Ingram was charged by amended information with six counts of rape in the third degree, three counts per daughter covering July through October 1988. Ingram also confessed to ritually abusing his children in the context of "Satanic ceremony", which his daughters confirmed took place.(AP)

1988 Santa Roca, CA Satanists Charlotte Thrailkill and Daryl Ball, who were part of a "devil club", were caught and sentenced to prison for sexual battery against 6 children involving kiddie porn and Satanic rituals. Ball and Thrailkill both pleaded No Contest [which means "I'm guilty, but I just don't want to say it"] to the charges . Daryl Ball threatened witnesses to keep them from testifying (which isn't something innocent people do, by the way). During the 18 month preliminary hearing, the children testified that they were threatened to keep quiet or the perpetrators kill their mothers. The children also described being molested while being filmed with a banner in the background reading "Super Duper Child Molest Day." They were forced to watch the video of their own molesting afterwards. A plea bargain was struck, reportedly to spare the kids from having to testify further. In Sept. 1998, Satanist Charlotte Thrailkill was declared "a violent sexual molest predator"--the first female to have that distinction in California. I guess Satanists can be #1 at something after all! The same children were questioned by the Army later as part of the Presidio Day Care molestation case, and one girl allegedly identified Aquino as "Uncle Mickey" who molested her. Aquino denied the allegations (and has made a career out of denying it, which he still does even now) and was never tried or convincted, though.  (AP)

1988 Kansas City, MO Robert Berdella is arrested and confesses to the torture slaying of six men. Police eventually determined he had killed a total of 23 men. Upon searching his home, police discover hundreds of pictures of his victims in sado-masochistic poses, occult books and a Satanic robe, among other occult related items. Police also found human skulls and bones and a human head buried in Berdella’s yard. Berdella owned an a store that sold unusual and often times occult items called "Bob's Bizarre Bazzar".  Police claimed that there wasn't any indication that the crimes were connected to a Satanic ritual or group, although not everyone is convinced of this. Berdella received life in prison where he died of a heart attack in 1992.  (AP)

1988 St. Thomas, Virgin Islands  St. Clair Daniel was arrested tried and convicted for two human sacrifices. Daniel hacked to death Genevieve Lewis, 53, and Steve Cornish, 29, with a machete on a beach in broad daylight in front of several horrified beach goers. Family and friends told police Daniel had been a practioner of his own brand of island Voodoo and Satanism. At his trial in 1989, Daniel tried to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, but prosecution pointed out Daniel was aware of what he was doing, because he followed an ancient voodoo superstition of dismembering a ritual victim so they could not return as a zombie. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. (Rueters)

1988 St. Joseph - Satanists Clifford St. Joseph is convicted in the 1985 murder of an unidentified man, whose mutilations include an inverted pentagram carved in his chest. 1988 Roswell, GA Police raid an abandonned house used by tresspassing Satanists for rituals. The police find, in addition to walls covered with Satanic grafitti, an altar with black candles and a grisly "hand of glory", made from candles attached to severed human fingers. In folklore the "hand of glory" is suppsoed to aid robbers in robbing houses by rendering everyone inside in a hypnotic state when lit. it's unknown if the Stanists in question were planning any robberies to use it in.   (AP)

1988 Umatilla County, Oregon Suspected serial killer Stanley M. Bernson planned to break out of prison with the aide of a Satanic cult he belonged to called "The Brotherhood". Deputy Steve Fogelson gave details to the plan, involving a hijacked helicopter, shotguns, automatic weapons and smoke grenades. The Sherriff Dept. said far from being a crackpot plan, the escape plan was feasible and could have worked. Bernson was a suspect in the murder of 30 young women in the Northwest and later recieved life imprisonment for the slayings instead. (AP)

1988 Provo Utah Ed Beeson, Joe Bennet and Louis Ivey were three skinhead Satanists who started a Heavy Metal band called “Rigor Mortis”. The trio met with other skinheads in the boiler room of an abandoned building that was once used by BYU. The skinheads formed their own Satanic coven, and regularly sacrificed animals and took LSD as part of their “magic”.  The cult was raided in a drug bust and later were released on bail. Police found the floor of the boiler room smeared in blood and Satanic grafftti on the walls...the kind of motiff that members of the "alien elite" known as Satanists seem to love. Beeson and Bennet skipped bail and drove to Las Vegas. Seven days after the Neopagan holiday Imbolc, they robbed a convenience store, killing clerk Michelle Moore, 21, and wounding a bystander. A police informant lead police to the killers. Bennet was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. Beeson was sentenced to two life terms, and killed in prison by a fellow inmate in 1990. (AP)

On the witness stand, Belcher describes animal sacrifices for the court: "We ate their eyeballs and innards and drank their blood. We toasted the devil by drinking the blood." Belcher claimed Satanism gave him power...aparently the power to land in prison with a life setnece, because that's what happened. (AP)

1987 Tacapisi, Peru 14 y.o. Ronald Adolpho Copa, the son of a tribal shaman,  was found sacrificed at an Indian ritual cite, along with a black dog. Coptu had been studying under Adolpho’s father Marciano Victor Copa, to be a shaman. Ironically, the sacrifice was carried out using rituals from Victorio’s own spellbooks. (Rueters)

1987 Antioch, CA Wearing men’s clothes, Satanist Kathleen Ann Miller, 25, shot and killed Carol Knox, a well known minister for Unity (an occult church), and wounded her housemate,  Dorothy Jo Dunning. A high speed chase in the dead woman’s car began after the police put out an APB. Miller shot herself during the chase, crashing Knox’s car into a parked trailer. A suicide note found in the wreckage said Miller believed she was the reincarnation of Eva Braun, Hitler’s mistress, and mentioned “the Satan-lite [sic] inside of me”. Police said Miller was usually a normal person, but was heavily into the occult, and lost touch with reality from time to time. Miller’s fingerprints linked her to an earlier  murder of an elderly woman.  (AP)

1987 Oakland, CA Oakland police recived an anonymous tip about a Satanic cult that was planning to sacrifice a child. Police went to the address that was to take place. Outside, they heard blood curdling screams, and quickly rushed in. Fortunately, the victim turned out to be a cat...well not so fortunate for the cat. Several men and women were involved, accrording to police. Why do Satanists hate cats so much? (Orlando Sentinel)

1987 Los Angeles, CA Joseph Danks, the "Koreantown Slasher" is arrested for five murders, tried, and sentenced to life. In 1990 he strangled an elderly cell mate, later telling guards he saw the opportununity to kill again and took it.  When asked about his state of mind at the time of the killing, Danks said, "My transgressions are not outlandish or reprehensible. To me they are justified. The Pagan [creed] I adhere to overwhelms the Christian morality." This is why "Do what thou will" has it's limitations, folks. Ya gotta have them morals for a sane society! 1987 Fairfield, Indiana Satanist John Fryman is convicted in the dismemberment slaying of 21-year old Monica Lemen, whose severed legs are found outside a rural Indiana church. Discovery of a black- painted ritual chamber in Fryman's mobile home, including a gravestone employed as an altar, animal jawbones, satanic figurines and a plastic ram's head, prompted the defendant to admit, "I'm involved with the occult. I think everybody knows that. You don't have a room like that in your trailer if you're not." Indeed. He was sentenced to life in prison. In 1993, Fryman was nearly killed by other inmates for "being a snitch" during a riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville that left one guard and nine inmates dead. Fryman later became penpals with a female deathrow inmate, Christa Pike. In Dec. of  2000 Fryman mailed Knox County Assistant District Attorney Bill Crabtree eight psycho love letters of Pike's written between Sept. 11 and Oct. 19, 2000,. In one love letter she wrote, "I like to see blood and brains - fatty tissues and wide open ripped flesh.'' And they say romance is dead!  Fryman included a letter to the Prosecutor Crabtree, ''Figure all these things are of more value to you than to me, You see Mr. Prosecutor dude I'm down (in prison) for Satanic Murder. They say that I practice magic still.''  You think after winding up a prison snitch with a life sentence he would learn magic doesn't work!  (AP)

1987 San Fransisco, CA Army Lt. Colonel Michael Aquino is questioned by police concerning an alleged child molestation at the Army's Presidio base. A 3 y.o. girl identified Aquino as the “Mikey” who had sexually abused her and photographed her naked in a black painted room with a cross on the ceiling. Aquino was never formally tried for any crime from the investigation, but the incident continues to haunt him...partly because he kept going on TV talk shows like Oprah and Geraldo to comiserate about it. One cannot help but see the irony that Satanists claim "individual responsibility for one's actions", yet when a grown man cuts his hair in an Eddie Munster widow's peak, plucks his eyebrows, tatooes "666" on his scalp, always dresses like Dracula, and heads a Satanic cult where he claims he talks directly to the Devil, he suddenly seems shocked and hurt when people think he's a weirdo. Prior to this incident, Aquino had appeared in newspaper articles with headlines like "Satanist is Colonel in Army". The army began to recieve hundreds of complaint letters from people who couldn't understand how a Devil worshipper got a high level security clearance and answered only to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It's said Aquino was made to retire sooner than he would have wished as result of all the attention.

1987 Hominy, Oklahoma Maurice Barnes III is convicted for the death of Osage Indian Chief, homosexual, and oil Tycoon Victor Red Eagle. His accomplice, Prentice Crawford, beats the murder rap, but is found guilty of arson. The murder stemmed from a curse Crawford claimed he placed on Barnes. Barnes was told by Crawford the only way to remove the curse was via human sacrifice. Victor Red Eagle had recently angered both men and thus became the choice for human sacrifice. Crawford then tried to burn Red Hawk's mansion down to conceal the real crime. At the trial, each man accused the other of being the one who actually strangled Red Hawk.  (AP)

1987 San Fransisco On January 26 around 10 A.M., A 22 y.o. woman is kidnaped and raped by a suspect police call "the Satanic rapist".  While walking along the city's Mission District, the woman was forced into a van by a knife weilding white male believed to be in his 30's. She was bound with duct tape with her hands behind her back, gagged with a piece of red cloth, and left prostrate as the assailant drove. The woman was horrified to discover she was next to the corpse of a previous vitim, also a young female, with blond shoulder length hair, who had been stabbed to death. The van was draped in red and covered on the inside with pictures of Satan and may have had a pentgram drawn on the ceiling. After driving for several minutes, the man stopped the van and told her "I'm going to kill you", but proceeded to rape her instead. The victim said he first donned surgical gloves and took off his blue jumpsuit, revealing a "silver necklace with satanic pentagram", (possibly a baphomet?). The rapist had long dirty brown hair and a burn scar extending from his right cheek to his shoulder. Sometime after the assault around 5:00 P.M., she managed to escape and report the crime to the police.  The police believed her story and put out an APB. 200 tips about vans came in, but none panned out. The suspect still remains at large. Anyone with any information should contact SFPD.  The anonymous tipline is (415) 552-4558. 1987, Nashville TN An unnamed (because he was a minor) 15 y.o. male Satanist was expelled form school and sentenced to 3 years probation and counseling for stabbing another 15 y.o.. The incident took place on 2-18-87 at Brown County High School.  The attacker’s parents were made to pay $1000 for the victim’s expenses. The attacker belonged to the School Satanic gang called “Children of Wrath”, and had stabbed the boy becasue he declined to attend an after school fight. The Children of Wrath gang had bullied students in the school during the previous months, threatening students with notes decorated with pentagrams, and “666". Teachers apparently ignored what was going on, or weren’t paying attention. The attacker also cut himself in the attack, requiring 10 stitches.  The remaining Alien elite of the Children of Wrath were all made to sign resignations or be expelled, and thus the Satanic cult came to an end. The teen sacrificed a cat & hung its carcass on the fence of a classmate he fell out with, as part of a "Satanic curse". However, as Shostrom drove away from the scene, he was spotted by two witnesses who recognized him from school. The police, upon interviewing Shostrom's mother, discovered he was obsessed with the occult and devil worship. The intended curse's victim confirmed this also, adding he and Shostrom had been friends until Shostrom's occult involvement creeped him out. A group of friends confirmed seeing Shostrom with the cat earlier that day and the he said he would sacririce the cat and drink it's blood. His curse failed and he went to jail. 1986 Jarocin, Poland Two Satanists are arrested for descrating human remains and sacrificing an animal. The Satanists identify themselves as members of "The Worshipers of Satan" cult. Original name, huh? On August 1st, after attending a Rock Music festival, the twenty member cult decided to top off the evening with a Black Mass at a Roman Catholic cemetary. The two accused served as "masters of ceremony". The cult unenterred a casket and used it as an altar. They then captured a stray dog, tortured it to death, and placed it in the casket as part of a "Lammas Day ceremony". PAP news agency did not release the names of the accused. (Reuters)

1986 Denver, Colorado- Dana Jones is arrested for the murder of a fellow cult  member on Feb. 2nd, the Neopagan holiday of Imbolc. Jones tells police she and her lesbian lover were members of the Argentinum Astrium...a "sex magic" cult founded by Aleister Crowley in 1907, after he got kicked out of the Golden Dawn.  Police found an altar, ritual daggers, occult books (most written by Crowley) inside the basement of the house. An autopsy revealed that the victim had injested blood while still alive that was not his own, meaning he had participated in a blood drinking occult ritual. Apparently the ritual took a turn he wasn't expecting. Acquitted on grounds of insanity and confined to a state hospital, Jones escapes in June 1988, with aid from a sympathetic nurse on the staff, and fled to New Mexico. She shortly commited suicide afterwards. (Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1986 Montana Satanist Wayne Nance is shot and killed while attempting to sacrifice a couple in their home. Subsequent investigations linked Nance to five other previously unsolved murders dating back to 1974. Nance became involved in Satanism and the occult in his teens. In high school he branded an inverted pentagram in his chest with a heated coathanger. (Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1986 San Diego, California Satanists Lori Bartz and Robert Wilkins were  both convicted of eight counts of lewd and lacivious acts on children. The couple seemed to always have neighborhood kids at their house at all hours, which made authorities suspcious. Suspicions were confirmed when parents of children molested by the two came forward. Bartz and Wilkins used Satanic imagery in their abuse of children. Sometimes Bartz would gnaw on a plastic ram and use ventriloquism saying "This is the Devil, do what I say". When parents would find out about the abuse, the duo would threaten them with curses and the show of firearms. At the trial the defense tried to plead that "another Salem witch hunt" was taking place. But the overwhelming evidence persuaded the jury otherwise. While there were many bogus claims about "SRA" , this is at least one pair of  criminals who used Satanic imagery to frighten their victims, no matter how seriously or not they took Satanism. 1986 Carleton, Michigan 15 y.o. Phillip Gamble killed his 17 y.o. brother Lloyd as a human sacrifice by shooting him in the head with a shotgun. Phillip Gamble later told police he belonged to a 10 member cult of Satanists who all went to school at Airport High School. A police search turned up a well read copy of The Satanic Bible, ritual robes, an altar, swords, knives and various occult items. Chapter 9 of the Satanic Bible titled “On The Choice of Human Sacrifice” lists sibling rivalry criteria for such a "choice". Rather than kill his brother with a ritual curse as the book suggests, Gamble chose the quick way. and just shoot him with a gun (because the ritual curse doesn't work). The case was processed through juvenile court. The murder shocked the community and sent parents into panic mode, looking for anything resembling Satanic jewelry or occult books and the like, understandably. (AP)

1985 Houston, TX On 8-5-85 a Satanic Cult comprised of  Harold Glenn Smith, Martin Wayne Tosh, Michael Gene Cravey, Shannon Rivera, and Bridgette Stowe, ages ranging from 16-18, had grown tired of sacrificing animals and decided to move on to bigger game. Smith, known as “The Wizard”, decided to sacrifice Dennis Keith Medler to Satan, because he previously had kicked he and Tosh out of his home. Lured to a secluded area on the ruse of picking psychedelic mushrooms, all took turns slashing his throat. Smith told the victim’s lifeless body, “Hey Keith, it was nothing person, we just wanted to see someone die.”“The Wizard” received life, plus a $10,000 fine. Stowe was not present at the killing, and testified against the others. Cravey received life and was also later charged with the murder of Ronald Monohan. Trimmer pleaded guilty and recieved two concurrent 60 year terms. Tosh plead guilty and received 20 years for his part. Rivera received 15 years, eligible for parole in 2 years, as the jury decided she hadn’t used a deadly weapon in the sacrifice. Police suspect the cult also sacrificed 16 y.o. Wayne Schubert, and a teenage “Jane Doe”, but lack of confessions or enough evidence prevented the cases from being prosecuted.  (Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1985 San Francisco, CA On 6-15-85 police recovered the body of “John Doe #60" from an auto salvage yard. The man had been tortured and sexually abused over a period of several days before his killers finally cut a gash in his perineal area causing him to slowly bleed to death. A pentagram had been carved into his chest and there was black candle wax present in his hair and right eye socket. The break in the case came from responding to a disturbing the peace call 9 days later. Two patrolmen arrived at the residence of Clifford St. Joseph in the middle of a homosexual S & M Satanic ritual with 3 friends. Clifford St. Joseph had no apparent connection to the Church of Satan, but did have connections to the O.T.O., (which had an 11th homosexual degree). Rather than a nude female altar, a 19 y.o. male was bound and stripped naked inside a circle of black candles on the floor & being whipped and assaulted, and fortunately the cops arrival prevented him from being John Doe #61. Paramedics rushed him to a rape center where he later recounted Clifford had met him at a gay bar, later drugged him and held him prisoner, where he was repeatedly assaulted by he and Maurice Bork, and other Satanists who dropped by for the event.  The participants were all dressed in black robes, a human skull with a black candle adorned the mantel, and The Satanic Bible was being used in the proceedings. Bork later jumped bail, but was recaptured after an armed robbery in 1987. Bork admitted to participating in the killing of John Doe #60 during a Satanic Ritual, in which the victim’s blood was collected in a gold chalice and drunk as a toast to Satan. Clifford St. Joseph was convicted of first degree murder and received 25 years to life. The other unidentified participants were never caught, and still remain at large. Anyone with any information should contact the SFPD. (AP)

1985 Provo UT A teenage Satanist described his coven's rituals to police, claiming they caught cats because "they're all over the place". He then said they would slit the throats so everyone could drink the blood. He described his first time: "It was salty and kind of scary, but I went for it anyway. You kinda don't think about anything else". Well, he didn't think about anything else, anyway.  (Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1985 Lynchburg, VA Steel executive Derek Haysom, 72 y.o., and his wife Nancy, 53 y.o., were found slain in their home. Police determined robbery was not the motive, and there was Satanic grafitti at the crime scene, including a red triangle painted on the wall in the victim's blood, and "666" carved on the wooden floor. Police later find letters by the Haysom's daughter, Elizabeth Roxanne Haysom, 22y.o., which implicate her in the crime. Elizabeth had fled to the U.K. and was living under an assumed name. She was arrested in London on check forgery, and extradicted to the U.S. She was later convicted in a Virgina court for the double homocide and recieved 90 years.  Friends of the family described Elizabeth as headstrong, eccentric, and facinated by the occult. Her boyfriend, Jens Soering, a West German national, was believed to have also participated in the crime. He had also been arrested in London with Elizabeth for check forgery, but the West German government would not allow Soering to be extradicted to any country where he might recieve the death penality. 1985 St. Clair County, Michigan  A coven of 4 teenage Satanists aged 12 to 14 were arrested by police for torturing and mutilating animals in an old barn that was the cite of their rituals. 8 cats, a dog, a fox, and a squirrell were among the victims. A 12 y.o. member confirms the animals were "sacrifices to Satan". According to a father of one of the juveniles, about 2 years prior, a 21 y.o. man got the kids involved in devil worship. And parents allowed their kids to hang out with a 21 y.o. man because....? (Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1985 Calaveras, County, CA Leonard Lake is arrested for shoplifting and commits suicide while in custody via cyanide capsule. Police search his rural home and discover skeletal remains of 25 victims, along with tapes of the rapings and slayings commited with his partner in crime, Chales Ng. Upon questioning, Lake's ex-wife reveals Lake had often bragged about membership in a "coven of witches" that met in San Fransisco. Former neighbors also recalled Lake claiming to belong to a "death cult" that practiced ritual sacrifice...but no one bothered to take him seriously. Ng stood trial on 12 counts of murder in 1998, after a long extradition battle with Canada. He was convicted of 11 murders, those of six men, three women and two baby boys, and was sentenced to death. He is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison.(AP)

1984, Newport Long Island, NY  Teenage Satanists Richard Kasso and James Troiano are arrested for the ritual slaying of a fellow "stoner.", Gary Lauwers.  All involved, including the victim, were avide reader's of Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible. It was the only book Kasso owned in fact. Kasso and Troiano were not the typical kids next door. Troiano had been arrested a few weeks before on a burglary charge. Kasso had been arrested previously for robbing a grave to use the skull and hand in a ritual. Both were drug dealers who lived on the streets. The Satanists allegedly once made a "pilgrimage" to the infamous Amytiville house while unoccupied, constructing an altar in the front yard and doing a ceremony. The media wrongly claimed the teens belonged to a cult of Satanists called "The Knights of the Black Circle", but the Black Circle was apparently another group of drug addicted deliquents. Swell town, Newport. Gary Lauwers owed Kasso $50 for drugs, and apparently this is why he was chosen for sacrifice. Jimmy Troiano admitted in court that he kicked Gary Lauwers in the side breaking his ribs, and held him in a head lock while Ricky "Acid King" Kasso repeatedly stabbed him in the back. As he was being murdered,  Lauwers was told repeatedly "Say you love Satan!" until he finally did , as Ozzy Osbourne's Bark At The Moon played in the background on tape. Kasso hung himself in jail awaiting trial 2 days later; Troiano is acquitted in 1985 after a key prosecution witness, Albert Quinones (who was also present and helped bury the body, but granted immunity for his testimony)  admitted he had used  drugs too, on the night of the crime. Troiano litterally gets away with murder, despite his own confession on the witness stand that he held Lauwers as Kasso stabed him. Hopefully, he turned his life around.

Kasso and Troiano had a teacher. Known as "Pat Pagan", he was an alcoholic Vietnam vet in his late 30s who lived on a disabilty pension (he was "shell shocked"). Pagan claimed he had been part of a coven in Vietnam, and wore a Pentagram necklace that all the members wore. The other 12 members had allegedly been killed in Vietnam. Pagan apparently combined Wicca, Voodoo, Satanism, and anything else in his brand of witchcraft. Pat Pagan had an altar in his house, told practically everyone he met about his occult interests, and could often be seen talking to Newport's teens. Pagan befriended Kasso and Toirano and the trio participated in occult rituals at Pagan's crash pad, which was said to have been packed with occult items he had collected over the years. Kasso was wearing Pagan's Pentagram necklace around his neck when he sacrificed Lawuyers. Kasso lost the necklace in the struggle, and it was found by the police with the Gary Lauwers decomposing body 2 weeks later. After the murder of Lauwers, the police questioned Pat Pagan, who denied any involvement or knowledge of the slaying whatsoever. The police bought his story and let him go. However Pagan comitted suicide a few days later by standing in front of a train. All this suggests he was probably more involved in the sacrifice than he admitted. 1984 Las Vegas, NV While Satanist Deron Knepp was talking on the telephone, friend and fellow Satanist Sage Taylor Francis went “boxcutter” on him, cutting his throat and cutting out his tongue. Just before that, the two boys had been freebasing and chatting about Satanism. Taylor had planned to go to San Francisco to visit “the head Devil”, LaVey himself. Taylor had planned to use the money and drugs from Knepp’s sacrifice to finance the pilgrimage. However, he played too much in the victim’s blood, and was picked up covered in it by police as a result, as he tried to thumb a ride out of town. Knepp somehow survived the assault, and Taylor later confessed to the crime. He got 15 years in the juvie “Ricon” program. His lawyer claimed he was “born again” in prison, which seems to happen to a lot of criminal Satanists upon arrest. Some of you Satanists might just want to become born again and skip the crime and imprisonment part of the whole thing. 1984 Nevada Carl and Colleen Gordon were murdered execution style in their home as part of a Satanic “get rich quick” scheme. Their grandson, 19 y.o. Satanist Dale Flanagan, decided that the quickest way to get his inheritance was to murder his two grandparents that had always doted on him. Ironically, the Gordon’s never made out a will, unbeknownst to Flanagan at the time. Flanagan  and 5 other friends, Randy Moore, 18, Roy McDowell, 18, Tomas Akers, 18, Johnny Luckett, 17, and Michael Walsh, 17, who had formed a Satanic coven, decide to kill the Gordon’s and make it look like a break-in. But they didn’t do such a hot job, which lead to their arrests. Flanagan later told ploce he was a “black magician” and that it wasn’t the highest level of Satanism, but one of the higher ranks. At the trial his ex-girlfriend told jurors that at the time of the murders, “Obviously they were into it to the point they had no moral values left”. Aker’s pled guilty to manslaughter and received 5 years probation in exchange for testifying against the others. Flanagan and Moore received the death penalty. Walsh received 4 life terms. Luckett received life w.o. parole. McDowell received life eligible for parole in 2035. Flanagan told reporters while being transported to death row he knew of other covens and other human sacrifices, but later declined to give out details under advice of his attorney. Flanagan’s path to ruin began when he and Moore heard a lecture about Satanism by a Satanist at a university in 1980 (ah, the benefits of higher education!). The pair began to get involved in the occult from that point on.

Due to errors, the first two death penalty verdicts for Flanagan and Moore were ultimately vacated by the state Supreme Court. But Flanagan and Moore were sentenced to death a third time by a new jury in 1995. That sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court a year later. The first death sentence for both Flanagan and Moore was reversed by the Supreme Court due to misconduct by Dan Seaton, one of the prosecutors. The second death sentence was ultimately overturned because of "improper references to Satan worship by the men". The second sentence was originally upheld in Nevada, but the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the state court to reconsider. The Nevada Supreme Court then ruled that the "Satan worship information was unrelated to the crime and should not have been considered at the penalty hearing". Owens told a Nevada court in 2007 that if it orders another penalty hearing, Flanagan was given the death sentence by a fourth jury. Satanism is a brutal religion which teaches selfishness. "Death to the weakling, wealth to the strong". Sure sounds like it had seomthing to do with the killings. (AP, Las Vegas Review-Journal )

1984 Miami, FL Cuban immigrant Frank Escalona Francisco had a criminal record, including shooting someone in a road rage incident in 1969 when he opened an unlicensed daycare in ‘84. In 1981 he sexually assaulted a 9 y.o. girl, and got off with a slap on the wrist with 2 years probabtion.  His wife was an illegal alien, Illiana Fuster. They were married when she was 16, in 1983 and reportedly could pass for 12 or 13. Children left at the daycare began to act strange when at home. Parents noticed rashes, nightmares, and sexual behavior in their kids. One kid told his mother that Illiana kissed all the babies privates. The parents began to compare notes, and discovered all the children at the daycare were showing signs of abuse. The police were called in, and in questioning the children revealed Frank and Iliana sexually assaulted them, and wore Frankestein and Dracula masks to frighten them and made to watch horror movies. They were also threatened with knives not to tell. The children were sometimes made to have sex with other children. The pair sacrificed birds over their kitchen sink while chanting to Satan and “the god of ghosts”. Bird sacrifice is used in Hispanic sorcery, particularly Mexican Brujaria, and "La Santisma Muerte", the spirit of death, is worshiped like a god. Frank and Illiana had also videotaped the events, but police bungled the investigation, & Frank managed to remove the tapes before they searched the house...even with neighbors phoning the police warning them Frank was moving several boxes of stuff out of the house.
Frank called in a Santeria priest to cast a spell of protection in the house, but it didn’t work.

But some evidence did remain, including incriminating kiddie porn. One  picture showed a child lifting Illiana’s dress to reveal her fecal soiled underpants. Another picture showed Frank and Illiana in Frankenstien and Dracula masks, even though they had gotten rid of the masks before police searched the house. Illiana turned state’s evidence on Frank, and sealed his fate. At trial she described how Frank and sexually abused the children and forced her to do likewise. He would sometimes rape and beat her in front of the children, and frighten the children with halloween masks and psychotic games such as chasing them around the house with a knife. When he was really angry, he would smear feces on her, violate her with a  crucifix, and threaten to violate her with a power drill. She also confirmed the bird scarifices and Frank's involvement in Santeria. Frank got 6 life sentences and will never live to harm a child again. While in prison he tried to put a hit out on Illiana, offering video kiddie porn for payment. Illiana received 10 years + 10 years probation.  Even though some of the stories of “Satanic child daycare abuse” are bunk, this one was definitely not.(Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1984 San Fransiscco CA Police were called when Howard Anton Levey, a.k.a, Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan and author of the Satanic Bible, strangled his common law Wife Diane (nee Hegarty) into unconsciousness. Daughter Karla LaVey pulled her poor stepmom outside to save her life . Diane would later sue LaVey for half his property, and claim LaVey had physically abused her throughout their 26 year relationship. LaVey also had other incidents with the law. Daughter Zeena claims LaVey was the passive witness to the molestation of his own grandson, Stanton, in 1986 by one of LaVey's friends who was later convicted of sex crimes with minors, although LaVey was not charged with any wrong doing. Zeena herself was impregnated at age 14 by a Church of Satan member purported in his 30's. LaVey's was once arrested due to his lion's (named Togare) unruly behavior and LaVey was ordered to donate it to the San Francisco Zoo. The animal had been mistreated by LaVey (he used an eletric cattle prod on him) and Togare had to recieve special treatment the remainder of his life.  Defector P.E.I. Bonewitz claimed LaVey blackmailed some of the members of Church of Satan to supplement his income. (LaVey family members)

Though never charged formally, LaVey was said to have pimped out female followers and beat them when they didn't bring back enough money as part of his "Satanic sex therapy" scam. He also claimed in the 1960's he presided over a "cannibal feast" of a human leg procured from a hospital, which would have certainly landed the diners in jail had they got caught. Many of the members of the Church of Satan in the 1960's were members of Law Enforcment (ah, those California cops!), which is presumed by many why LaVey avoided legal entanglements most of the time. LaVey was on the right side of the law in one incident, when in 1979 he reported to the F.B.I. that someone had written the Church of Satan to make a contract killing on a U.S. Senator. During the interview with the FBI, LaVey told them he had become "disillusioned with Satanism" at the time, but apparently went back into his rut later on. LaVey filed for bankruptcy in 1992, and died from pulomnary edema in 1997. (LaVey family members, Real Magic by P.E.I. Bonewitz,

1984 Sanford, Maine 12 year old Gycelle Cote is found murdered in the Mousam River. Rumors had spread throughout the small town a few months earlier that a Satanic cult was going to carry out a human sacrifice on Halloween. After several people recieve threatening letters signed "The Cult", police arrest several youths, and people dismss the whole things as a prank. Eyewitnesses placed Scott Waterhouse with the girl the day of the murder. When questioned by the cops, Waterhouse, a juvenille deliquent with a history of medical problems,  at first denied killing the girl but then babbled on and on about Satanism. His involvement in Satanism dated back to 1983 after reading Lavey's Satanic Bible. He said after that he began to question why God allows bad things happen and enjoied the idea of Satanism's "whatever floats your boat" philosophy. Upon investigation Police discovered evidence linking him to the murder, and other threatening letters Waterhouse was writing that were similar to the ones from Halloween. He was convicted and given life in prison with no chance of parole. Now he'll have a lot of time to wonder why Satan allows bad things to happen. 1983 Dusseldorf, Germany Sylvia Brakel is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Spanish immigrant Jose Luis Mateo Fernadez. Fernandez had been killed with a single blow to the heart with a knife, and the murder had been staged to look like a suicide. However, upon searching the squalid 2 room apartment, cops found a woman’s diary belonging to Brakel. The first page read “Whoever reads this will be damned for all eternity”. The cops read further and found the owner was obsessed with Satanism and witchcraft. The entry for Walpurgisnacht, (April 31st ) 1982 read “Lucifer. Price of Darkness, give me a sign” and contained a promise to giver herself wholly to the Devil. Brakel had a suspended sentence from 1981, involving a stabbing with her lover. Fernandez and Brakel had an “open reationship”, with Brakel and Fernandez sharing their bed with many other women. Brakel and Fernandez belonged to a local Satanic cult, with Brakel serving as the nude altar, just like in the Satanic Bible. The other members of the cult told police Brakel had killed Fernandez in an argument, oddly enough, about infidelity. (Reuters)

1982 NOV Los Angeles, CA The Church of Naturalism seemed like your typical run of the mill New Age cult. Church officials claimed nothing was going on except “spiritual rebirth”. The group’s philosophy was detailed in the 1976 book “Mind Styles, Life Styles” by Nathaniel Lande. Defectors from the group, however, asserted charges of mind control. Neighbors said what was going on was a really front for drugs. The police discovered the god of the cult was money, and the cult wasn’t above murder. The group started ironically enough in 1965 as a way for Hippies to kick LSD (called “The LSD Rescue Group”) and seemed to be a sort of weird psychotherapy cult, not unlike Scientology or est. Starting in Chicago, it moved to the land where anyone can start a wacky cult and make piles and piles of money, Los Angeles, in 1971. The founder of the group, George Peters, was no Boy Scout. Peters had been involved in the CIA’s MK ULTRA LSD and sensory deprivation mind control experiments in the early 60's. Apparently Peters decided at some point the CIA shouldn’t have all the fun with brainwashing people, and started his own cult using what he’d learned. Spiritual rebirth didn’t come cheap at the church, which required members to surrender 4/5 of their income. Some of the unorthodox methods of “therapy” included everyone, male and female, getting naked in a hot tub and massaging each other. In another technique called “Death Judgement Experience” the participant was required to live for 40 days inside a black box to recall their past lives. I imagine the former method of therapy was more popular than the latter. Despite the steep price, membership swelled and by 1979 the group had moved its HQ from North Wilton Place to a 6 acre estate Woodstock Road in Laurel Canyon at $4,500/month (which was expensive back then). Police got reports from the neighbors that they thought the compound was some kind of “drug factory”, because they saw seedy characters going in and out at all hours of the night, and there was a lot of security there. In 1981 police got an anonymous tip that a drug deal was going down at the church compound. Police raided the church and netted 2 ounces of cocaine, 66.5 grams of marijuana in a tool box, 3/4 a gram of hashish, and $3,200 in cash. Due to a technicality which the California legal system is famous for, the charges were thrown out in court.  Despite that faux pas, the Church of Naturalism had apparently managed to gain enough credibility that a local PBS station agreed to assist the group in making a series of anti-drug programs for broadcasting ...and yet Juan Williams isn’t allowed to say he’s scared of Muslims at the airport. Go figure. Before the first program could be produced, however, tragedy struck.  On Nov. 6, 1982, church founder George Peters, 43, and treasurer James Henneberry, 31, were found shot dead outside the church compound. Upon investigation police discovered the word “DRUGS” spray painted inside one of the houses in the compound, and what the murderer was after but didn’t get...$1,300 in cash in jewels inside a safe. There were dents on the safe where the killer had tried to shoot the lock off unsuccessfully. A defector from the cult informed police that he had overheard two church officials talk about the murders of Peters and Henneberry. Cult member George Robert Smith, 32, pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder and church secretary had Melinda Gail Faulcon, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter. Smith received life imprisonment w/o possibility of parole while Faulcon received 7 years for her part.  (Official Detective Magazine, March 1984)

The children had also been sexually assaulted.  Another news report writes that the "macabre ritualistic killings included drinking the children's blood, trances, and electric shock 'treatments.'" The bodies of both were wearing occult jewelry, and a police search of their home turned up numerous occult books on witchcraft and ritual magic. 1980 Wauchula, Florida a psychic and tarot card reader who billed herself as "Sister Anna" was arrested for fraud when police recieved complaints from victims who had been bilked out of thousands. One victim claimed to have paid a total of $5,000 to remove a "curse" the psychic said was placed on her by a witch. Despite the negative publicity in the local T.V. and newspapers, the business was sold to yet another "psychic". The business changed hands a few more times over the years, but continued to be occupied by psychics, tarot card readers, palm readers, etc., for years , and apparently had no trouble attracting suckers...er, customers that is. In 2004 when Hurricane Charlie struck, the then current "psychic" parked his Corvette next to a billboard before the storm hit. The storm caused the sign to fall on the car, totalling it. One would think with psychic powers he would have forseen it. As of October 2007 the business closed, reopened breifly by a fortune teller in 2009 for a few weeks, and closed once again. The building is now used as a beauty shop and tanning salon. (The Herald Advocate, WFLA, and my own personal knowledge)

1980 NYC, New York Nut job Mark David Chapman assassinates ex-Beatle John Lennon, devestating millions of fans worldwide. While most people remember John for the song "imagine", which cause atheists and "xtian" haters to druel over the line "Imagine there's no Heaven", what isn't well known is that Lennon experiemented with Christianity between 1973-1978. Lennon took it seriously enough to attend church irregularly, and write to televangelists Pat Rbertson and Oral Roberts. In one letter Lennon told Roberts he was relieved to find out he could be forgiven for saying the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Unfortunately Lennon changed his mind by 1978, mostly becuase of wife Yoko, and went back to Agnosticism. Of course, I've known many people to "get religion" when they're on the last page, so who knows what John was thinking (or praying) in his final moments?  What is also not widely known is that Chapman is a self styled Satanist. Chapman abandoned Christianity in 1977 and turned to Satan worship, but I'd say he'd have been better off being a Christian. After he botched a suicide attempt, he took it as a "sign from Satan". Chapman claimed he then prayed to Satan to make him "totally psycho" and apparently got his wish. He is spending the rest of his life in prison for murder. In an interview in 2000, Chpaman said he assinated Lennon somehow hoping it would make him popular, but regreted it had the opposite effect. 1980 Bangalore, India Swami Laxman Giri, 69,  is arrested by Indian authorities for making human sacrifices. Giri was the leader of a Kali cult in a rural area of India near Banaglore. His preferred victims were children age 6 and under. Giri lured the children to rural cites by promising them candy, and then slitting their throats. It was done to provide he and his followers "immortality". He died of natural causes in a hospital a few days after his arrest four days later before he could stand trial. The body count is unknown, but authorities fear the sacrifices may have gone back decades. Swami now faces an even higher authority. 1979, The Philippines Police reported that a couple, whose names were not disclosed, belonged to a sect which believed that cannibalism confers supernatural powers, apparently not unlike one in New Guinea. The couple were charged with murder for "eating" two brothers. The brothers were kidnapped from a city 650 miles from Manila. They were allegedly beheaded by members of the sect, then photographs of the beheadings were taken by a leader of the cult and sent to the widow of one of the victims. Officials stated it took a long time to bring charges because witnesses were too fearful of testifying due to fears of reprisals by the cannibal sect.  The Philippines was once notorious for head hunters and cannibalism, and is believed to have never completely cleaned itself  of such things.

1979 Fall River, Massachusetts On 10-11-79 17 y.o. Doreen Levesque was found under some bleachers at Fall River High School.. She had been bound, her skull crushed, and stabbed. Levesque had been a prostitute and had a history of drug abuse at age 12. In Jan of 1980, Barbara Raposa was found dead, also murdered in a similar fashion as Levesque. Police were tipped off to by a Andre Maltais, 53, to Robin Murphy and Karen Mardsen, both prostitutes, who accompanied him to the police station. When questioned by police, Mardsen said her pimp, Carl Drew, was a “die hard Satanist” and the killer of Levesque. Drew even had tattoos Satanic symbols and “Satan Avenger” on his arm. This jibed with info gathered months before the murders by a female undercover officer who infiltrated a gathering of pimps and hookers, and discovered the local sex trade scene was into Satanism, including animal sacrifice. Drew was questioned at one point, bragged about being a Satanist, but denied his role in the killings. Mardsen later refused to talk to police, saying Drew had threatened to kill her if she didn’t shut up. In Feb. Maltais, who had been helpful to the police, seemed to know too much about Raposa’s killing, and was arrested as a suspect. Police didn’t buy his story about a “psychic vision”. Then Murphy came forward, and said Maltais was Raposa’s killer.

Drew made good on his promise to kill Mardsen. Her skull was found on 4-14-80. Murphy confessed to police about her roles in murders, fingering Drew and Maltais and a William Smith in the process. Murphy pleaded guilty to second degree murder. At the trial, gruesome details about Satanic rituals and Drew performing necrophilia on Mardsen’s headless corpse were told to shocked jurors. Maltais displayed Bibles and pictures of Jesus at the trial, but jurors didn’t buy it. Drew now denied any occult activity, and had sandpapered his tattoos off, one of which now simply read “Avengers”. Murphy later recanted her story, and Drew got away with murder. He served 7 years for assaulting Satanist and prostitute Maureen Sparda, and is back in society. After serving 24 years, Murphy was parolled to a halfway house in 2004, which angered relatives of the victim and cops who worked on the case. Marsden's sister Wendy Alves said, "I shouldn't have to be a prisoner in my own city or home. I'm terrified that one day I will walk into a Dunkin' Donuts and there she'll be working behind the counter".  (AP)

1979 Ridegfield, CT On 6-10-79 Policeman Michael Passaro was attacked and assaulted by a Satanic cult. At 2:30 A.M. he was patrolling Osceleta Road when he stopped his car to investigate a report of gunshots, strange music and loud noise.  He came upon a group of individuals wearing black capes and hoods, 4 of home rushed him and attacked him. He fought off the attackers as he tried to get back to his patrol car. He finally managed to get them to cease with a can of Mace and by scaring them away with his siren. The Satanic Organization of Connecticut was questioned, and denied it was them, claiming it was probably some renegade members who got kicked out their group. No one was ever arrested in the incident. (Raising Hell: An Encyclopedia of Devil Worship and Satanic Crime by Michael Newton )

1979 West Paterson, New Jersey - The mutilated & bloodless corpses of Carol Marron and Howard Green (both known to be openly into the occult) were found.  Carol Marron had told friends a few days before the murder they were trying to join an O.T.O. group (there are several groups calling themselves O.T.O., and it's unknown to which she was referring). The murder appeared to be done as part of an occult  ritual sacrifice and the crime scene evidence indicated that there was definately more than one person was involved in the murder. Their eyeballs were blown out, the tips of their ears cut off and almost all their blood had been drained through approximately 30 puncture marks made in identical places on the two bodies, investigators said. A veteran detective commented he had never seen anything like it in all his years on the force. The two corpses were bound in canvas and rugs and dumped in West Paterson, N.J., where they were discovered by a boy walking his dog. A Post investigation into the double homicide found not only that the trail to the brutal killer has gone cold, but it may never have been followed properly. The case is still unsolved. 1976 New York City The summer of '76 will forever be known as "The summer of Sam" thanks to serial killer David Berkowitz (and Spike Lee). Berkowitz commited a series of murders with a .44 calliber handgun and put the "cultural center of the universe" on hold. Before police caught him, Berkowitz taunted police with several letters wih references drawn from A.E. Waite's Book of Black Magic and of Pacts. One of the murders took place outside the Elphas Disco, which he later told police was chosen because the name was similar to Eliphas, as in Eliphas Levi. While in prison he still continued to read occult books, such as Peter Haining's Anatomy of Witchcraft. He was said to have told a fellow inmate "I just can't stop thinking about Satan!" Berkowitz would later claim in prison he was part of a larger Satanic cult, but this may have been due to his own lunacy, or some kind of ploy to free himself...or possibly even the truth. In 1997, Berkowitz told Eyewitness News producer Maury Terry that he had other partners in crime, saying it was a murder conspiracy. Berkowitz said the conspiracy began with satanic meetings at Untermeyer Park in Yonkers. David Berkowitz, Convicted Killer (1997): “I mean, this was not just something they were doing for any type of, necessarily, pleasure, but that it was just part of an agenda. A very deep, covert and hidden agenda. You know, they were about making war, and they were about bringing some chaos into the world.” In fact, Berkowitz says there were at least five other killers altogether, and they included women.

His claim is supported by multiple composite sketches of suspects, most looking nothing like Berkowitz, and descriptions of several cars at several scenes. Carl Denaro survived a gunshot wound to the head in the Son of Sam shootings & believes there were others “I firmly believe that the police brass, and certainly the detective working on it knew, knew then, and obviously still know now that other people were involved. I think it was kind of convenient, for them to, you know, one guy, one gun, one shooter, he’s caught, it is all over.”, he said in an interview. Joseph Borrelli, Retired Chief Of Detectives: “The best proof I have that he acted alone: Has there been a homicide of a similar nature since? If this was a cult, why didn’t, after he was arrested, why couldn’t they get another individual under the same circumstances, and have that person go out and do the killing. Because there never was a cult, and there wasn’t anybody doing it, except him.”, said Borelli.Berkowitz has never given specific details about the cult. Terry Maury made a hypothesis of a link between Berkowitz, Manson, and The Process Church via a worldwide network of bikers, drug dealers, child pornographers, snuff film producers and devil worshippers in his book  The Ultimate Evil...but that idea seems far fetched. 1975 Dayton, Ohio  John Todd, a.k.a. Lance Collins, opened an occult book store called the "Witches Cauldron" at 3140 Main Street. Todd told the Dayton Daily News that he was the local Grand Magnus of the Wiccan Church , that Bonewits's AADL was "a legal arm of his church" & that he had 5,000 members in his Wiccan church in southwestern Ohio (which was a lie). Todd held a church charter from Gavin and Yvonne Frost's Church and School of Wicca. Todd's "coven" apparently consisted mostly of underage girls. One 16 yr old apparently disclosed to the police that Todd had conducted nude "witchcraft initiation rites" and that Todd had forced her to engage in oral sex. Gavin Frost yanked his charter...although when you read the stuff Frost perscribes for underage girls in The Good Witch's Bible it pales in comaprison. Todd responded to the charges in a Dayton newspaper that he was being harassed by the local police and said that to protect himself "his covens will resort to their ultimate weapon- witchcraft." Not surprisngly, his witchcraft worked about as good as any Wiccan's, and he was arrested in Feb of '76 for corrupting a minor. None other than Catholic hater and comic book maker Jack T. Chick help spring him. Previously Todd had claimed he was an ex-Wiccan, saved by a Chick tract, and then lectured in churches. Chick (whos own handle on reality is questionable) wrote a comic book about him. But in reality Todd was just a delsuional man who got involved with witchcraft after his "conversion", used dope, seduced female church goers, and "mixed Christianity with Wicca" while he was supposedly saved. An army psychiatrist once labeled Todd as having "emotional instability with pseudologica phantastica', which means he can't tell fantasy from reality. Todd re-converted to to Christianity and resumed his lecture circuit as though nothing had happened, merely calling his heading a Dayton coven "backsliding". By 1978, his lies caught up with him, and he was exposed in the book The Todd Phenomenon. His lecture circuit career was over. In 1990, he was convicted to 300 years in prsion for the brutal rape of a South Carolina woman. At last report, he re-converted to Wicca while in prison and recieves regular visits from a Wiccan prison chaplain. (The Todd Phenmenon, AP)

1974 Santa Clara, California 19 y.o. Arlis Perry is found murdered in a ritualistic manner early in the A.M on Oct. 13th, 1974 at Stanford Memorial Church. The Newlywed and Stanford University Student stopped at a local church at 11:50 PM on 10-12-74. When she failed to return home, her husband called police. Perry's body was found nude from the waist down. The cause of death was an ice pick inserted in her skull behind the ear. She had also been beaten and choked. She had been violated with a 30 inch altar candle that was protruding from her. Her blouse had been torn open and a candle was placed between her breasts, held in place with her arms folded over. Her legs were spread open and her jeans had been removed and draped over them to form a diamond pattern. Arlis' husband was questioned by the police and cleared as a suspect. A few days later (the night before Hallowe'en), someone stole the marker from her grave in North Dakota, police think it may have been the killer. Arlis had allegedly tried witnessing to a group of Satanists in nearby Mandan a few weeks earlier. Witnesses recall seeing a sandy haired young man entering the church after the late night services. Arlis' co-workers recalled a sandy blond haired man having an intense discussion with Arlis outside of her workplace (a Palo Alto law firm) on Oct. 11th, 2 days before the killing. the description given to police was similar to the man seen at the church. Police obtained a paln print from the altar candle, but it did not match any prints on file. In 1980 Minot newsman Jack Graham was told by a local source that Perry’s murder involved “someone at Stanford registered under a false name”. The case still remains unsolved. 1974 Washington D.C., The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Senate Subcommittee on Health and Long Term Care held hearings on psychic surgery. In these hearings, the FTC heard the testimonies of 48 witnesses and reviewed 134 exhibits. According to these witnesses, the Filipino healers had defrauded their patients by palming small plastic bags, which contained blood and tissue. The witnesses maintained that the Filipino healers were defrauding their patients by producing these plastic bags in sleight-of-hand simulations of surgery. Working from the premise that Filipino healers were impersonating surgeons, thereby practicing medicine illegally, police began setting up sting operations in order to prosecute them. In 1984, Congressional hearings chaired by Claude Pepper reviewed the files of five governmental agencies. These agencies included the FTC, American Cancer Society, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health & Human Sciences, and The American Medical Society. This four-year review led to the conclusion that they ‘could find no evidence that psychic surgery was effective.’

1973 Daytona Beach, FL In April Daytona Police found the battered and bloody corpse of Ross "Mike" Cochran in a thicket of scrub pine and palmetto outside town. Cochran had been killed by being cut with broken glass and beaten with chains. Police discovered that Cocharan was the victim of devil worshippers killed in a frenzied sacrificial ritual while strapped to an altar  as part of a "a Black Mass sacrifice" The murder took place in the basement of a brokendown flophouse apartment dubbed "roach haven" by its young residents. A week after the body was found, police arrested 10 young beach drifters and charged them with first-degree murder in the slaying. Cochran worked as a moneychanger in a pinball arcade and liked to claim he was an undercover narcotics officer (he wasn't). This boastful bluff may have been what made him a candidate for human sacrifice. (Press Telegram Wed. June 1st 1973 Long Beach, Forida )

1973 Waukegan,Illinois Serial killer and rapist Alton Coleman believed Voodoo made him invulnerable to arrest. His favorite Loa was Baron Samedi, the god of death. When his Voodoo didn't work, he tried threats and violence against victims who testified against him. In 1973 he and a buddy kidnapped, robbed & raped an old lady. She refused to testify about the rape & Coleman served 2 years for robbery. After that, Coleman was arrested for yet another rape. On the way to becoming a serial killer, Coleman gave the law many chances to put him away, but Alton was  a smooth talker who could convince jurors that the police had the wrong man in the days before DNA testing. Four rapes including his 12 y.o. niece later (in between jail time) , Coleman murdered the next rape victim in 1983.  Coleman went underground to avoid capture, still believeing Voodoo would help him. Then Coleman with his girlfriend Debra Brown went on a murderous 53-day rampage in 1985 starting with the rape and murder of a 9 year old girl. From this brutal act to the time they were arrested in Illinois the crime spree resulted in eight homicides, seven rapes or more, three kidnappings and 14 armed robberies. His crime career came to an end in 1985 when he was arrested, tried, and convicted and sentenced to death. The sentence was eventually carried out in 2002. Both claimed to be  members of the "Four Pi" cult (which may have been another name or possibly an offshoot of the Scientology/Satanist offshoot called "The Process/The Church of The Final Judegment/The Family"). Baker & Stroup admited to the murder of Robert Salem, which was confirmed when bloody fingerprints from the crime scene matched Baker's. 1970 Salem, MO Gavin and Yvonne Frost write a book titled The Witch's Bible. The book appears to have been a textbook of sorts for their mail order Wicca course. The Frosts started The Church of Wicca in 1968 in Salem Missouri, (not Massachusettes). While no crimes were broken in publishing the book, and the book itself is not illegal , it does describe some things which might land people in jail if they tried them, and many of the things described might seem to have alterior motives behind them. At first glance, the manual seems to be geared not only toward wifeswapping and open marriages but also pedophiles. One shocking item is a ritual for deflowering a girl upon entering puberty that uses a homemade dildo shaped like an ahnk. The girl is supposed to be instructed to use it upon herself, gradually working her way up to bigger sized dildos. The book says that girl should be given a "demonstartion" on how to use the ankh/dildo by another member, and the child is to be told if she has difficulties performing the task the coven's high priest or her own father will assist. Using a dildo on a child (ecspecially one's own) must certainly be illegal, not to mention just plain perverted. The Frosts claim no one has ever tried the ritual, but it the book's author gives very specific instructions as to positioning of the girl's body during insertion, which sounds almost as though he'd participated in  such events. It seems strange that the deflowering ritual is still kept in the later editions of the book considering the controversy it generated for the Frosts years later if it's supposedly never used as the Frosts maintain. The secrecy that is part of Wicca could easily conceal such acts. The Witch's Bible also says the child should decide on the method of contraception, which makes it clear the child is being prepared for use in sex rituals. Sex with underage children is most definately illegal. The book also says children are not the property of the parents but belong to the coven...making suchs groups sound like cults.  It also says children should be told everything about sex, with no "birds and bees" lest they grow up like "sexually repressed perverts as Christian children do" It says covens should create a schedule for rotating the children to live with other members...one can only wonder for what purpose! The book even says it's hoped the child's first sexual expirence will someday be with the other coven members present as part of a Wiccan sex ritual. It seems pedophiles would have a field day in thse types of covens. The Frosts were some of the pioneers of the American Wicca movement and helped write the 1974 Wiccan "Principals of Belief", but nowadays they are the black sheep of Wicca and most Wiccans denounce them. In the 1990's, the word "Good" was added to the book's title, although there is little if any good in it. The book seemed to go completely unoticed during the so-called "Satanic Panic" in the 80's and 90's, oddly enough. Blessed Be! (The Witch's Bible later retitled The Good Witch's Bible by Gavin and Yvonne Frost)

The note was signed, "Knight of Wands, Knight of Cups, Night [sic] of Pentacle and Knight of Swords." which are all cards in the tarot deck. 1969 Blythe, California Georgia Brayton was the leader of a renegade(?) faction of Alesiter Crowley's Ordro Templi Orentis, known as the Solar Lodge. The cult had been responsible for drug trafficking, child abuse, and may have been responible for the dissapearance of one member,  a Palm Springs dentist, who is still missing. When a building burned down on the cult's ranch, she punished 6 year old Anthony Gibbons. First she burned his hands to get a confession, and then forced him to bury the charred remains of the cult's sacrificed goats. When she still felt the boy was unrepentant,  the boy was said to have been "beaten all day" by fellow O.:T.:O.: members with bamboo rods. Allegedly still unrepentant, the Crowley devotees chained the poor child in a crate all day and night in the boiling Califorinia sun from May 23rd to July 26th, until passersby called the police. They appeared to no longer practice witchcraft there, and opened a small cafe. Monique died in 1980, and her husband 2 years later in a car crash. Yvette is apparently no longer involved in Wicca and has vanished entirely from the public eye.

1968 Los Angeles, California  Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Presidential hopeful Robert Kennedy,  giving conspiracy theorists a field day in the process. What isn't well known is that Sirhan is deeply into the occult, in particular Theosophy and numerology. A copy of H.P. Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine was found on his person when police arrested him, and he requested the book first thing when he was in jail. Sirhan also said to have had connections to The Process Satanic cult (as did the Mason Family).

1968 Warwickshire, England Police laucnch an investigation to find culprits responsible for a weird Satanic ritual at Malvern Park. The crime scene included an inverted cross, black candles, and two animal hearts skewered to a makeshift altar made from park benches.

1968 San Fransisco, California Police have no luck in trying to capture a serial killer who taunts them with messages by phone and mail known as "The Zodiac". Police surmize the killer has knowledge of the occult from things the killer mentions in his letters, particularly astrology and references to the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The killer also enjoyed writing in cyphers, another tool of some occultists, such as Rosicrucians. The killer, according to eyewitness survivors, was said to have worn a black jumpsuit with a black hood. Covering the outfit was a frontlet with a white cross inside a white circle, the astrological symbol of the earth. One survivor gave a description of the hood with occult symbols that Zodiac wore that sounded similar in discription to a hood worn by Aleister Crowley. The taunting letters to the police and murders apparently continued right into the early 1980's, when police think the killer may have finally killed himself.

1968 Yucatan, Mexico A gunboat commanded by Captain by Domingo Caseguena captured a suspicious looking cruiser running under a Hatian flag. The boat, Le Roukur, was manned only by the captain, Emmanuel Dessilies. He claimed he was headed to Key West to sell the boat. Down bellow Mexican authorities found 16 black men in a catatonic state in filthy conditions and an unbelievable stench. The captain eventually revealed the human cargo was intended for sale as slaves in a bizarre plot to finance an overthrow of the Papa Doc Duvalier regime. The boat, the captain, and the "zombies" were returned to Haiti, their fate is unknown, but probably very unpleasant. 2 weeks later the FBI raided a Hatian expatriate camp in the Florida Everglades, apparently as a result, although details were not given.  There is some truth to the Voodoo legend of Zombies.

Anthropologist Wade Davis discovered Zombies are not dead people that have been magically "re-animated" at all, but actually people who have been drugged (with a very complex drug made from the poisonous blow fish) into a coma, buried alive, and later dug up, revived, and made into slaves. The "zombification" process seems to cause the victims to remain in a catatonic like state, almost as if labotmized, probably due to brain damage. Zombies are used on plantations as slave labor, although some die in the zombification process, or go completely insane. Being made into a zombie in Haiti is considered a horrible punishment.

1966 Helikon, Switzerland Police raid the headquaters of a Satanic cult known as the "Seekers of Mercy", and discover a scene out of a horror movie. After the suspicious death of a female follower, police decided to investigate further, raided the group's "church".  Police discovered an altar with black candles, occult books and paraphenailia, and a well equiped torture chamber...strange items for a Christian sect to have, as they would be later mis-identifed in the press.  Further investigation revealed the girl had been sexual assaulted, tied to a large upside down cross,  and flogged as part of a "Black Mass". Several members were tried and recieved life in prison.

1966 London, England Wiccan Roy Bowers, a.k.a Robert Cochrane commits suicide by ingesting Bella Donna leaves on the Summer Solstice, June 21st as a human sacrifice. Cochrane/Bowers was the founder of a Wiccan "tradition" known by the names of "Tubal Cain" "1736" and "The Windsor Cuveen". Later his followers continue on, and rename the group "The Regency". Cochrane's 8 y.o. son was slated to take over the group when he became an adult but rejected Wicca instead.

1965 Lake Titcaca, Peru Herminia Alave and her infant son were both murdered as part of a Pagan human sacrifice. Their bodies were dismembered and their remains were scattered along the lake’s shore. The culprit was an Indian “yatiri” (shaman) who used the alias Maximo Coa. Coa said he killed them as part of a “prosperity spell”. He was sentenced to just 6 years in prison, and continued to practice sorcery, including human sacrifices, right into the 1980s. In 1980 at Unicachi, Peru, Nieves Chipana Uchario was killed as a human sacrifice by Maxima Coa at the request of a drug cartell Coa was convicted and recieved 20 years in prison this time, but his sons bribed guards, who let him leave prison, and Coa resumed his shaman/hitman career. There are at least 7 more victims attributed to him.

1964 Guilford, England Police discover the remnants of a black magic ritual held inside a ruined church. The crime scene included black candles, Satanic graffiti, and two sheep hearts pireced with wooden stakes.

1964 Los Angeles Vaughn Greenwood begins his career as “The Skidrow Slasher”. Greenwood slays homeless victims by slashing their throats, collecting the blood in a chalice, drinking a toast to Satan, & drawing markings near the victim’s wounds of apparently occult significance, & sprinkling salt around the victim’s bodies. Salt is used in occult rituals as a means of purification and exorcism. In Voodoo, it’s believed that salt can kill Zombies. Greenwood is believed to have committed at least 11 more skid row killings in an identical manner. Greenwood was finally caught in 1975 and sentenced to life in prison in 1976.

1963 Figueras, Spain 10 y.o. Maria Diaz disappeared from her neighborhood on 5-21-63.  Maria was never seen again. Some witnesses claim they saw her climb into a new car that day occupied by two men. The following night, a local shepherd tending his flock on San Salvador mountain heard chants and shouts and saw a bonfire on the summit above, where a roofed site of worship constructed by monks centuries earlier lay. At daybreak he went to investigate and discovered a tatered piece of cloth that turned out to belong to the dress Maria was wearing when she vanished. There was also the smell of incense in the air, and stubs of black candles, as well as occult symbols drawn on the ground. Police think Maria was a human sacrifice. To date, the case remains unsolved

1963 Clophill, Bedfordshire, England St. Mary's Church was desecrated as part of a black magic ritual. Six graves were desecrated and the skeleton of one woman was arranged on the altar. A rooster was also sacrirficed on the altar, and upside down crosses had been drawn on he walls. This was part of a rash of such incidents during the ealry 1960's. While some of the more minor incidents could be written off as childish pranks, clearly this one cannot.

1963 Yerba Buena, Mexico The Hernadez brothers, Cayetano and Santo,  persuaded gullible farmers that Aztec “moutain gods” would give them gold if they would join their modern day Aztec cult. Membership dues came in the form of sex, with the women giving themselves to Santo, and Cayetano sodomizing the men, and also whatever monetary gain the pair could scam out of the peasants.  When the riches failed to materialize, and the men enlisted the aid of a blonde bisexual prostitute named Magdelena Solis. The brothers agreed to give Solis her share of their take, and she agreed to pose as a “mountain goddess”. You think even peasant Mexican farmers would know a blonde hooker isn’t a goddess, but they fell for it. The farmers were appeased with getting to have sex with the “goddess”, but some still wanted to see the gold. Cayetano announced the gods must be appeased with human sacrifice, as in ancient times. The choice of human sacrifice were two doubters, who were beaten to death, and their blood collected and drank by the followers. Six more doubter sacrifices followed over the following weeks. Magdelena became jealous when a teenage girl devotee and lover slept with Santo, & she ordered her to be sacrificed. She was tied to a cross, beaten to death, and then burned. She then ordered the sacrifice of a man she decided was a heretic, and followers hacked him to death immediately. A teenage boy happened to witness the cult’s activities, and notified police. The patrolman sent disappeared along with his guide. Next a flying squad was sent from Ciudad Victoria. They found the mutilated bodies of the cop and his guide. The cop’s heart had been ripped out. The cult had retreated to a cave, & a shootout ensued with the police that left 3 cops wounded.  Santos was killed, his brother had been killed earlier by a rival to the “Aztec priesthood”. The goddess and 12 followers were all arrested, tried, and received life in prison.

1961 California Nine witnesses saw John Wesley Riley chase his wife to a fence, and then shoot her dead while she begged for her life on her knees.  Riley pled not guilty by reason of insanity. His attorney said in court that Riley was under a voodoo spell.  Riley testified that he had been told his wife and her boyfriend had put a hex on him and, in his own desperation to undo the spell, he had consulted Voodoo priests and priestesses.  In her summation, Root argued that he was “the victim of a compelling belief in the supernatural powers of the evil eye, the hex, and the occult and sinister powers of voodooism.” He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

1960 Lago Bundi, Chile Two Chilean Indian Natives were charged with the murder of Jose Painecur as part of a Shamanistic ritual. Pagans  Juan Panan and Jose Vargas confessed to police they flung their victim into the sea by order of a Mapuche "malachi" (sorceress, shaman, witch, take your pick). The "malachi" explained this had to be done to "appease the water gods", The superstitious "shaman" believed an earthquake and tidal wave that ravaged  a reservation at Lago Bundi had been caused by "angry gods" who had to have a child sacrifice! Apparently plate tectonics are not tauught in Shamanism. The said witch, Juana Nucarma, was never charged, and Panan and Vargas were released after just two years by a no doubt equally superstituos judge citing Chile's 'compelled to kill by irristable psychic force of ancient belief" superstitious baloney law previously mentioned. Please pray the ACLU never hears of that law.

1957 Vineland, New Jersey Puerto Rican farmhand Juan Rivera Aponte was arrested and convicted for the murder of 13 year old Roger Carletto. Aponte, raised on an island where Santeria and it's cousins abound just like on Cuba, became smitten with his boss' 15 year old daughter. Aponte set out to make the girl his love slave via sorcery. He found a love spell in an old grimorie that called for the powdered skull of an innocent boy. Aponte murdered Carletto for this purpose. Not only did it not work, but he got a life sentence for murder. He died in prison several years later. I recieved a letter from the niece of Carletto who said the parents never completely recovered from their son's death.

1957 Naples, Italy Marianna Castellano was a "strega"...a witch, not the kind you read about in Leland's Gospel of Aradia or books by Raymond Grimassi which are modern inventions, but a genuine strega. Castellano was hired by a client in 1937 to cast a spell on some of her relatives. For the service Castellano charged the client $1 a month for the rest of her life. But after the fall of Mussolini and WWII, a buck a month just ain't what it used to be. Castellano demands more money. By 1957 the client decided she had paid enough and told the "strega" there would be no more payments. Castellano the went to the deadbeat client's home with a pan of burning gasoline to burn her alive...a case of reverse witch burning! A struggle ensued, and Castellano wound up being burned to death instead, however. The former client was acquitted on grounds of self defense.

1955 Cordelle, Georgia  Anjette Lyles became rich after marrying and then murdering her husbands and collecting the hefty life insurance policies. She also bumped off family members too, including her 9 year old daughter. Eventually the trail of corpses caught up to this Hoodoo root worker gal. The newspapers dubbed her "Gay Widow Killer". During her trial, she freely admiited to the murders and also revealed her involvement in Voodoo. Police found dozens of "brand name" Voodoo candles like "Van Van" and "Jinx Removing" in her house. She also always carried roots with her, and saw a fortuneteller everyday. Apparently money spells weren't her forte', which is why she resorted to murder to make a living. She collected a total of  $47,700 in life insurance payouts over a period of about 4 years in addition to the $190 a month widows pension the VA gave her. Not a small amount of money for 1955. But she blew the money on boyfriends, a Cadillac...and books and items on the occult (sound like someone you know?). Her magic landed got her the death penality. She was later placed in the Midgeville, GA asylum where she spent the rest of her life.

1953 Chile 27 y.o. Juana Catrilaf, a Pagan, belonged to the Mapuche Indian tribe. South American Indian mythology is ripe with tales of blood sucking demons and witches, and a history of bloody human sacrifices, unlike the romaticized versions of "Shamanism" New Agers paint. Catrilaf is charged with the murder of her grandmother whom she said was a "machi" - a sorceress. Catrilaf blamed her grandmother for the death of her infant son, and for the epilepsy that troubled her for several years. Using the shamanistic remedies for the situation, she clubbed the old woman, slashed her forehead, and sucked some of her blood. Catrilaf claimed she felt a "firey demon leave her body". Her indian tribe was pleased with the results. Incredibly Catrilaf was acquitted for the human sacrifice due to a law in Chile that recognizes justifiable homocide due to "irresistable psychic forces". Imagine if the U.S.A. had that law!

1949 Brooklyn, NY Raymond Hernandez did a dumb thing (well, several dozen dumb things, actually)...he stole a suitcase at a train station and got a year in prison in Talahasee, FL. His cellmate was a Hatian who turned him on to Voodoo.  Hernadez became convinced he had Voodoo powers and even claimed he was a "hougan" (voodoo priest). After his release, he began to write dozens of letters to "lonely hearts" clubs where, through the mails, he began to seduce gullible females who were looking for men. Once he gained their trust, he would steal money, jewelry, checks; whatever he could embezzle, then dump them. The victims were ususally too embarrassed to complain to the police. Hernadez married one victim and killed her on a Honeymoon in Spain, making it look like an accident. One victim, Martha Beck, actually became his partner in voodoo and crime and wife #3. Raymond was still married to a woman in Spain at the time. Martha not only gave her children away to the Salvation Army at Raymond's request, she helped him swindle and kill other women he married.  Three murders later, they got caught.  Their 44 day trial was the stuff tabloids reporters dream of. Tales of three way strip poker, of Martha murdering a victim with a ball peen hammer, and dozens of lonely ladies taken to the cleaners. When Martha told the court about certain sex acts in  voodoo rituals,  two dozen cops had to  control with the crowds that tried to push their way into the courtroom.  They were both found guilty and recieved the death penality. Perhaps the biggest victims of all were the two young children of Martha beck who visited their mother on death row the day before her execution.

1945 Quinton, England Charles Walton was found murdered in a ritualistic way, involving witchcraft. When his body was found on 2-14-45, villagers were shocked at the scene of the brutal and ritualistic murder. Charles' trouncing hook was embedded in his throat, his body was pinned to the ground by his pitch fork, and a large cross was carved into his chest. Previous cases documented include people murdering those they believe have put them under a spell. In these cases, the victim - believed to be the witch or warlock that cast the spell - was often given the sign of the cross by the person taking their revenge. Police think that someone thinking they had been hexed by Walton murdered him to "break the spell".

1943 New Forrest, England Wiccan and Neoapagn Gerald Gardner, fearful that another Neoapagan, Adloph Hitler, might win World War II, begins to sacrifice members of his own coven. The oldest member is chosen to be sacrificed, using a poison . Two other members also died from "exposure".  Supposedly the sacrifices continued until it began to take a serious toll on the coven numbers, and Gardner, the creator of Wicca, claims he recieved a message from the gods themselves not to sacrifice any more members. Merry Meet and Merry Part, and Merry Meet Again (unless you're sacrificed?). The story came out a couple of years after Gardner's death by two independent sources, and the surviving members of Gardner's coven never denied the story.  Gardner told writer Francis King that the sacrifices were done in such as was as "to avoid legal unpleasantness". Wiccans who acknolwedge the story dismiss it as neccesary to win WWII. One might think all the thousands of Allied soliders and two atomic bombs had something to do with it, rather than some Brits murdered out of ridiculous superstition! And didn't the prayers of millions of Christians count for anything???

1932 Detroit, MI A black man confessed to police that he killed an "unbeliever" on an altar in his home at 1429 Dubois street early one Sunday, because his "gods demanded a human sacrifice".  The victim was James J. Smith, also black, and a roomer in the Harris home. Police found the body, with a fractured skull and a sliver knife in the chest, in a rear room of the house that Sunday afternoon. According the Harris, the victim mounted an altar in the room and stood with his arms outstretched, gazing at the ceiling. Then a few seconds before the minute hand of the clocked reached 12 Harris got his dirk out of a drawer and plunged it into Smith's heart, according to his tale. The victim's skull was then fractured by an automobile axle. Robert Harris and his wife, Bertha, were  charged with murder. Police sought  12 of Harris's "disciples" who allegedely witnessed the sacrificial murder. From them they hoped to learn the extent to which the rites of Voodoo have laid hold upon the imaginations of inhabitants of the quarter in which Harris had his "temple."

Harris claimed he was the leader of a sect called "The Order of Islam", but police eventually dismissed the claim after talking to the order's leader,W.D. Farad, who said Harris was "a madman", and had no standing in the order, although Harris was identified as a member.  The secretary of the order, Ugan Ali, told the press members are taught not to eat certain foods, to employ their time usefully, and that by their efforts the world can be rid of evil by 1934. Apparently they failed. Farad and Ali were held by police for questioning and released. Harris's prints were checked with those of the Evangelista killings, but turned up negative. During his trial Harris refused to remove his hat because he was "a king", and told the court,  "I said 'aliker alump,' and he fell dead. He died because it's a dumb civilization. But I gave my children a break, because I'm a lover of children. Well, I've got to go now." He then tried to leave, but not before trying to steal a pocketful of rubberbands. Harris became enraged when detectives later attempted to question him regarding the rituals and practices of his cult. He refused to answer, saying only that he was "going to kill lots of Christians." Police discovered Harris had belonged to a breakaway cult, based on Voodoo and Islam. The leader of this cult was Ugan Alie, who claimed he was "God of the Asiatic Nation". As Detectives Oscar Berry and Charles W. Snyder tracked down and investigated the ramifications of the cult's worship, they confessed themselves "amazed at the number of Negroes apparently enmeshed by the religion". A registry book was discovered which had 8,000 names and addresses in it. Meeting places which for many years had been thought to have been no more than fraternal lodges, were discovered  to have been "temples" where "susceptible individuals are incited to kill 'devils' in the hope of attaining heavenly forgiveness and reward." Farad told police Alie and Harris had "apparently misunderstood my teachings." Although Farad admitted the precepts of the Order command the death penalty for persons who "disturb the peace of our temples" he said, human sacrifices were not tolerated.

Police later determined people had been backed into joining the cult through pressure by other members, and were unaware of the groups dangerous ideas. In the days that followed, police were tipped off by an infomant of another member of the cult who planned to kill his own son in a ritual similar to the one Harris had carried out. The man apparently found out and fled before police could question him. Several other people told police they had been threatened by members of the cult, including one woman who told her employer 3 male members had made threats to her on her front porch. Another man came forward and said Harris had threatened him the day before the Smith killing, and said "now is the time for Crucifixings". The cult supposedly had a "hit list" of many Detroit city leaders who were to be killed as well as international figures like King of England. Leaders of the Detroit's Negro community began a drive to stamp out the Voodoo-Muslim hybrid cult. Rev. J.D. Howell of Stephen's African Methodist Episcopal Church denounced the cult (as well as all Muslims) in a series of sermons and called for an inter-racial commission to be formed for the purpose of driving the cult out. With mounting pressure from the media and both black and white community leaders, membership in the cult seemed to evaporate. Harris was deemed insane and spent the rest of his life in an asylum.

1929 Detroit, Michigan Theosophist  Benjamo Evangelista., his wife and four kids were all  found murdered in their home on St. Aubin Avenue, killed by an ax murderer. A single fingerprint in blood, which was found on the door knob of the Evangelista home, was the only clue the slayer left. The print has not been matched to any in police records. Evangelista had a ritual chamber in his house, with weird occult figures dangeling on strings.  Evangelista had been working for years writing an occult book manuscript with the catchy title The Oldest History of The World , Discovered by Occult Science In Detroit, Michigan. The main suspect for the killing was Evangelista’s old pal in the occult, Aurelius Angelino  Like  Evangelista, Angelino, was obsessed with the occult. While Angelino lived in Pennsylvania, he and Evangelista often performed rituals together. In 1919, Angelino went bezerk and killed his two children with an ax, and was sent to a mental asylum. In 1923 he escaped, and was never seen again. Some think he paid a visit to a friend, and that the murders were all occult related.

1928 York County, PA John Blymire, John Curry, and Milton J. Hess all believed they had been hexed, due to some unhappy circumstances in the lives of each. Blymire had recently lost a son, Curry was a 14 y.o. in an abusive home, and Hess had crop failure on his farm. All three sought the advice of a local witch, who named a local "hexmeister" named Nelson D. Rehmeyer. Pennsylvania Germans believed in a magic that was not a religion, nor "European Pagan Shamanism" nor a system of worship, and has no connection to Wicca, even though some occultists have tried to falsely make these claims. The witch told the trio to break the hexes they would have to either obtain a lock of Rehmeyer's hair or his copy of a commercially published occult book titled "Pow Wow's or The Long Lost Friend".  It's also called "The Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Bible". Blymire was also a hexmeister and also owned a copy of the book. The trio drove to Rehmeyer's house where they confronted him. A fight ensued, and Rehmeyer was slain. They were arrested for the murder. oddly enoug, the book claims whoever owns a copy will be protected from all harm. I guess once the owner is murdered, it's too late to get their money back, huh?

At the trial the judge refused to allow any reference to witchcraft be made. Blymire and Curry were given life in prison and Wilbert was given 10 to 20 years. In 1934, Hess and Curry were paroled and lived quiet lives in the York area. Curry became an artist and died in 1962. Blymire was finally paroled in 1953, returned to York and worked as a janitor. Their superstitous belief in hexes took many years of their freedom away. The book that caused all the trouble is stll in print, and the Wiccans have gotten on the bandwagon, now claiming the ook is somehow tied t Wicca, despite the fact the book predates Wicca (which was created in the 1950's) by about a century. One of the version of the book now has the word "Gypsy" in the title, even though it has nothing to do with Gypsies or Native Americans.

1913 Pinar Del Rio, Cuba A 6 y.o. girl is murdered as part of a Santeria type ritual. Jose De La Cruz and Eugenio Cardenas are arrested for the murder. The pair claimed they were only trying to draw some blood from the girl to cure a sick woman, and that they had the girl's parents permission. The girl was at first tied up, but escaped fled and her attackers. The two men decided to use gun powder to casue an explosion to then draw blood since the girl was afraid of the knife, but they used too much and killed her.

1912 Barcelona, Spain Brujare (witch) Marti Enriqueti was condemned to death and executed for the kidnapping and killing of six local children. Eriqueti rendered down the remains of the children for use in expensive “love potions” she sold to clients. Police raided her home and found a little girl named Angelita, who would have been victim number seven. Angelia told police the witch had kidnapped her, and forced her to eat a cannibal meal consisting of the remains of a previous victim. Confronted with overwhelming evidence and the little girls testimony, Enriqueti confessed to the crimes.  So much for those stories about witches stealing babies and eating them, huh?

1911-1912, Lousiana and Texas A series of ax murders took place in Louisiana and Texas. The first attack took place in Rayne, LA in Jan. of 1911, involving a mother and her 3 children being hacked to death in bed. In Feb.,the Buyers family was hacked to death in nearby Crowley, LA (bodycount, 3). Later all 5 members of a Texas family, the Cassaways, were hacked to death in April. The next murder was in Louisiana again, the Norbert Randal family was killed in LaFayete, LA in Nov. (Body count 6) In Jan. 19th, 1912, a woman and three children were killed in Crowley. 2 days later in nearby Lake Charles, all 5 members of the Charles Broussard family were slain. In Baeumont. TX, a woman and her 3 children were slain. On 4-11-12, The victims were usually light skinned blacks or mulattos, and always murdered in their sleep, with rape or robbery not being the motives. A note with quasi-religious language was left behind at the Broussard murder.  Rev. King Harris of the “Sacrifice Church” was arrested and questioned by police. King had been in town holding a revival of sorts during the day of the Randal murders. The Sacrifice Church had ties to several Voodoo cults in New Orleans. Voodooists often combine Voodoo with Christian rituals and symbolism. Sacrifice Church member Clementine Bernabet was questioned by police, and eventually confessed to the early crimes. She said that she other members had been given a charm called a “canja”, that would allow them to do anything without being detected. Police didn’t buy her story for some reason, and she was not prosecuted. Police noted the killer followed the rail road, suggesting it was someone who worked on a train. After some more killings, in San Antonio, TX, in August, the killer missed his mark, and struck  Mrs. James Dashiell in the shoulder. Her screams awoke the household, and caused the killer to flee. Dashiell and her family survived. The killings ceased, and shortly afterwards coincidentally, the Sacrifice Church was disbanded. The police were never able to get a solid lead in the killings to charge someone, and no suspect ever stood trial. Body count: 49 including women and children.

1901 London, England Frank Jackson, alias Jesus Christ and Editha Jackson, alias Laura Horos ,Mrs. Diss Dabar, Angel Anna, and Swami Viva Ananda stand trial for the rape of a woman as part of an occult ritual. Vera Corysdale claimed that Frank and Eidtha had drugged her and hypnotized her each day for a period of several days. In her helpless state, Frank had proceeded to rape her as part of her “initiation ritual”. Under oath Corysdale told a shocked London court that Frank had claimed he was Jesus Christ, and that having sex with him wasn’t a sin but “an act of piety”. Furthermore, any illegitimate children that might be accidently born would be “Divine”. Editha had been introduced to the Golden Dawn as "Anna Sprengel", Samuel Mather's ficticious contact who supposeldy lived in Germany. Jackson appeared at a time when  Mathers influence over the group was waning, and no doubt he enlisted the aid of Jackson to bloster his ludicrous claims. Mathers claimed he had been duped by Jackson as well, although he must have known full well Anna Sprengel wasn't real, so it sounds unlikely. The pair were intiated into the Golden Dawn by Mathers (odd thing for Mathers to do if she had been the one to grant Mathers a charter for the Golden Dawn in 1888 in the first place!), and later stole books containing the order's rituals for use in the Theocratic Union occult order they later created. Their connection to the Golden Dawn tainted the order's reputation, making it a laughing stock of British newspapers, and contributed in part to it's downfall. Frank received 15 years in prison for rape and Editha received 7 years as an acessory. Frank died in obscurity after his release from prison. Editha settled in Mississippi and resumed  being a fortune teller until she died a few years later. (The Golden Dawn Scrapbook by R.A. Gilbert, website about Editha Jackson )

1900 The Phillipines, Six non-Christian Phillipinos were sentenced to death for the murder of a woman they believed had occult powers. They were convinced the woman had killed a neighbors child with a magic spell. They broke into the house of Victor Pere and took he and his wife forcibly to the Lanay River where his wife was murdered. Victor managed to escape and contacted the police. Although all six men were sentence to death, a Christian named  Douglas MacArthur (yes, that Douglas MacArthur!) intervened and got the sentences commuted to 20 years, due to the “blind  superstition” of the accused. Belief in the power of witchcraft is indeed superstition. (Friday, December 28, 1900 Waterloo, Iowa The Semi-Weekly Waterloo Courier)
